Pomegranate (Punica granatum)
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a fruit that likely originated in Iran and Afghanistan. Historically, the fruit is mentioned by various cultures and religions. The pomegranate tree is said to have flourished in the Garden of Eden and is very likely the “apple” of the Adam and Eve story in Genesis. Greek and Persian mythology mention the fruit as representing life, regeneration, and marriage. The ancient Chinese believed the seeds symbolized longevity and immortality. The fruit is also a symbol of resurrection and life in Christianity, and it is one of the three “blessed fruits” in Buddhism. The fruit is very rich in antioxidant polyphenolic compounds (e.g. tannins, anthocyanins, quercetin). Today several human clinical studies have demonstrated that the regular consumption of pomegranate juice has numerous beneficial effects on heart health (reduction of blood pressure, reduced LDL susceptibility to oxidation, anti-atherosclerotic properties). Preliminary research also indicates an anticarcinogenic potential of pomegranate both as an oral and topical product.
