Olive Leaf (Olea europaea)
Olive leaf extract has been used for 6,000 years by numerous cultures for nutritional and medicinal purposes. It is called the “Tree of Life” in the Bible. When Moses was atop of Mt. Sinai, the divine recipe for making holy anointing oil included myrrh, cinnamon, aromatic cane, and olive oil. The ancient Egyptians used as part of their ceremonies and regarded olive leaf as imbued with heavenly power. Greek mythology attributes the creation of olive trees to the goddess Athena, who first planted an olive tree among the rocks at the Acropolis. She is said to have endowed it with the powers to illuminate the darkness, soothe wounds, restore libido, heal illness, and provide nourishment. The olive tree and its olive fruit was also one of the first domesticated fruit crops along with figs, dates, pomegranates, and grapes. It belongs to a plant family that includes the ash, jasmine, and lilac.

The epidemiological cardiovascular health benefits of the Mediterranean diet are well known today with the daily consumption of olive oil and the fruit (olives) from the olive tree. Olive oil and olives are rich in monounsaturated fats along with the major antioxidant polyphenol, oleuropein. This is what gives olive oil its characteristic scent. Today, the olive tree is widely cultivated today all over the world for its fruit and olive oil.
